The project co-financed under the Intelligent Development Operational Programme 2014-2020.

Glucowave is a non-invasive blood glucose monitoring system. The measuring element touches the patient’s skin, taking the measurement without disturbing the continuity of skin tissue. This makes it painless, easy, and convenient to use.

Project Aim

The outcome of the project will be the development of prototypes and clinical trials of a novel device for monitoring human blood glucose levels in a non-invasive manner.

Measurement Method

The Glucowave does not require needles or other invasive sensors inserted under the patient’s skin. The Glucowave, in terms of the measurement concept, works in a similar way to current, invasive CGMS-type products on the market. It measures a signal that is dependent (proportional) on glucose levels in the blood and interstitial fluid. It then converts its own indication into blood glucose units after the user has entered calibration values for blood glucose, obtained by measuring with a strip meter.

Range of Application

Insulin-treated patients, i.e. all patients with type 1 diabetes and a significant proportion of patients with long-standing type 2 diabetes, need to measure their blood glucose multiple times a day using a glucometer. Patients treated with a personal insulin pump or insulin in multiple daily injections at variable doses are recommended to take measurements up to 10-12 times per day.
